How to Get Their Ring Size (in Secret! Shhhhh!)
Quick Tips
- Go with the average ring size
- Ask for help from others (parent, friend, etc)
- Playfully ask them
- Test it with a costume ring
- Sneak a ring they already wear and measure it
If you’re thinking about proposing marriage/a commitment/something special to your significant other, there might be a million questions running through your head but perhaps the most common of all…how will I know their ring size!??
A Marry Me Ring takes the pressure off from finding a Dream Ring, saving you (for now or forever) from spending thousands of dollars and losing a lot of sleep stressing in case you select the wrong thing! That said, you want your Marry Me Ring to fit when you Pop The Question so you and your partner can enjoy the elation and thrill of them saying “Yes!”
Getting the right size can be difficult if you’re taking the surprise proposal route, but don’t let not knowing your loved one’s ring size stop you – we’ve got you covered!
THE LAW OF AVERAGES
While this might work, it isn’t a perfect solution to find a ring size. Everyone is different and not every person will fit the average.
It’s also a good idea to keep in mind that the dominant hand might be a little bigger. So if they are right handed, their ring finger on the left hand (where an engagement ring is worn) might be smaller in size than the one on the right.
If you’d rather not guess their ring size, there are plenty of other ways to find out your beloved’s ring size at home. To see Ring Sizes and the average sizes that might suit, see the Ring Size Chart.
TUNGSTEN RINGS AND RESIZING
Tungsten rings are difficult to resize because the metal is so hard but a Marry Me Ring can always be worn on a necklace if you’re far off the mark, or with a ring guard temporarily. (You can add one for free to your order before checkout. This allows your partner to still wear the ring initially until placing it on a necklace/chain or similar.)
If you are going to be shopping for a forever Dream Ring after your successful proposal, you can take advantage of having a jeweller professional size the ring together.
KEEP IT A SECRET
If you don’t want anyone to know about the proposal, then you’re going to have to do some of this work on your own. But fear not: There are plenty of options to find out someone’s ring size without them knowing.
Sneak while they’re asleep
If they have fallen asleep, this might be your opportunity to do the measuring yourself. Remember to measure the correct finger — they’ll be wearing this on their left hand, second finger next to the pinky!
Grab a small string of some kind and lightly wrap it around the base of their finger. When you pull it away, mark the length of the string. Pop in to a local jeweller and ask if they tell you the size that may suit, OR email us the length of the string without stretching it or pulling too tight and we can give you a size estimate.
Use an existing ring
If they have a ring they’re not currently wearing, borrow it when they won’t notice it missing – this is one of the easiest ways to determine a ring size BUT be careful… A ring worn on a thumb or middle finger will be very different in size than one worn on a ring finger. If you don’t think you can run the ring into a jeweller to size, just trace the inside of the ring (as close to the metal as possible) with a pencil (a pen could leave ink on the ring otherwise) on a piece of paper, measure and write down the diameter. You can then use the Ring Size Chart for a size estimate.
Improvise your measurement tactic
If you’ve successfully found a ring they already have that would be suitable to copy in size, here are some more tips.
Grab a bar of soap and push the ring down into the soap to get an imprint. Make sure you wipe away any soap residue on the ring before you put it back though! Now you can take the soap (or candle, if that’s what you had available to imprint) to a jeweller to help find an estimated ring size.
